What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a condition which affects many people throughout the UK, and one which is ignored, misdiagnosed and misunderstood. Early symptoms of rosacea can often be confused with acne, mild sensitivity and even sunburn. It is important to recognise the signs of its development and what steps can be taken to help to control it.
Rosacea generally affects the face, although it can appear on the scalp, neck, chest and back. Initial symptoms can include facial flushing, spots and persistent redness, as tiny blood vessels in the skin become more visible. In severe cases, skin around the nose can become thick and enlarged, and the eyes watery and irritated

Who Does it Affect?
Twice as many women as men are affected by rosacea, however symptoms are generally more severe in males. Individuals between the ages of 30-50 years, with fair skin, blue eyes and from Northern Europe tend to be most at risk. Experts estimated that around
2-5% of people have symptoms of rosacea.

Identifying Rosacea
As above, there are a number of signs to look out for when identifying rosacea. The earliest sign is often facial flushing, as many people with rosacea have a history of frequent blushing or flushing. This facial redness can be sporadic and may resemble a
blush or sunburn that does not go away.Small red solid bumps or pus-filled pimples are further evidence of this disorder and, while these may resemble acne, there are no blackheads. In some cases, a sensation of burning or stinging may occur. With many rosacea sufferers, small blood vessels become visible on the skin, while in
some cases, the eyes may be irritated and appear watery or bloodshot. This is a condition known as ocular rosacea. The eyelids also may become red and swollen, and styes are common. Severe cases can result in corneal damage and vision loss where
medical intervention isn’t sought. For more severe cases, burning or stinging sensations can occur along with itching or a feeling of tightness. Raised red patches, known as plaques, may develop without
changes in the surrounding skin. The skin may thicken and enlarge from excess tissue, most commonly on the nose. This condition, known as rhinophyma, affects more men than women.
Doctors can diagnose rosacea in patients, although there is no specific test for it. In extreme conditions, topical and/or oral medications may be prescribed.

Rosacea Prevention
Whilst there is no cure for rosacea, there are ways to prevent, or minimise, the effects of the condition. It is useful to identify and avoid the lifestyle and environmental factors that trigger rosacea flare-ups. These include:
• Sun/wind exposure
• Stress
• Hot/cold weather
• Strenuous exercise
• Alcohol - especially red wine
• Hot beverages and foods
• Spicy foods
There are also products and ingredients to avoid putting on the affected skin. These may
exacerbate the condition. Ingredients include; alcohol, mineral oil, lanolin, synthetic fragrance and isopropyl myristate, to name but a few.

Ingredients That May Help
Powerful natural ingredients, known to help rosacea, include Green Tea which is healing
and anti-bacterial, Chamomile which has a calming and destressing effect on the skin and French Rose essential oil, with its light, natural fragrance, to calm redness and reduce stress.
